Tutorial: Sewing notion shadow box organizer

Create a little shadow box organizer to effectively organize and display your vintage sewing treasures. This shadow box can be displayed in a corner to add a touch of nostalgic whimsy to your craft or sewing room.

Materials:

  • Old wooden cash box or drawer
  • Paint, wood stain and varnish
  • Vintage dress patterns
  • Old wine corks
  • Glue gun and stick
  • Vintage sewing notions and ephemera

1. Paint the wooden box in your favorite color or line the insides with vintage dress patterns.

2. Glue wine corks inside the box for use as utility hooks.

3. Arrange your sewing notions inside the box in a still life kind of way. Hang antique scissors on the cork hooks or hang ribbons or measuring tapes on them. For your still life arrangement you may want to use imaginative materials like vintage buttons in their original cards, sewing tins, altered sewing clip-art, ribbons etc. Let your shadow box reflect your sewing personality.

The Philippines needs your help

Please keep my country, the Philippines in your thoughts and prayers during these very difficult times. Typhoon Ondoy (international name: Ketsana) dumped 455 millimeters of rain in 24 hours in Metro Manila last September 26-27, 2009 resulting to an epic deluge that left hundreds of people dead and half a million people affected. The amount of rain that placed Metro Manila underwater was twice the amount of rain that Hurricane Katrina dumped in New Orleans.

The tragedy has rendered many people homeless and desperate. Children, women and the elderly are especially vulnerable and helpless. To see the extent of the damage that Typhoon Ondoy has caused, please view the video here.

I appeal to people with golden and kind hearts to help ease the suffering of the flood victims by helping donate to the Philippine Red Cross or to the World Food Programme. Thank you in advance and may God repay you a hundredfolds. Retweets of this post are very much appreciated.

Sweet Tidings Sponsor Giveaway: Flirtbuttons

Images from Flirtbuttons

Welcome to a most magical autumn/spring season with a sponsored giveaway from one my favorite ETSY shops!

Today's sponsor is Flirtbuttons, an ETSY shop that offers a wide array of whimsical handmade pocket mirrors, magnets, pinback buttons, bottle openers, belt buckles, paper clips, jewelry, hair accessory, rubber stamps and tags.

Flirtbuttons is run by Sharon, a textile designer based in Woodstock, Georgia. She has always loved making buttons and this is what she says when asked about what inspired her to create her ETSY shop:

I wanted a button maker since I was in elementary school. So in June of 2008 I took my birthday money and bought a professional machine. I now make pinback buttons, pocket mirrors, bottle openers, belt buckles and magnets. All are 2.25 inches. The first machine was so successful that I bought a one inch machine and make magnets, buttons, pendants, earrings, bobby pins, jumbo paper clips, rings and bracelets from it. I cover most of them in fabric, but some are designs on paper. The main point of Flirtbuttons is to have fun. I love quirky, cute and fun things in abundance.

Sharon's background in Fine Arts and her Masters of Science in Textile Design has proved very useful in helping her create new product designs for her shop. She has just designed her own fabric line which she uses for some of her pocket mirrors and magnets.

To date, the shop's top sellers are the organza wrapped black and white damask pocket mirrors that clients order by the hundreds as wedding favors. Her all time top selling bottle opener is Alice in Wonderland Drink Me! Browse the shop to see all the designs that suit any mood, occasion or celebration! Sharon also accepts bulk and wholesale orders. More information about Flirtbutton items are available at Sharon's blog. Readers may subscribe to Flirtbuttons shop updates by following the shop on twitter. Currently, Sharon is offering free worldwide shipping on all her shop's retail priced items to help people through the holidays.

For today's giveaway prize, Flirtbuttons is offering the one dozen assorted fabric covered mirrors pictured above.

Giveaway mechanics:

1. All you have to do is visit Flirtbuttons, bookmark the shop as an ETSY favorite, select your favorite item from the shop then come back here to post your comment.

2. Readers who twitter or blog about the giveaway will receive additional entries. Please leave your twitter or blog giveaway links in a separate comment.

This giveaway offer is open to all readers worldwide. Comments will be closed in the evening of September 29 and the winner will be announced the day after. Happy commenting and good luck!

Thank you Sharon for sponsoring this lovely giveaway!

Sew pretty Christmas homestyle project

Remember last year's handmade ornament countdown which started in August? Well, I'm quite late this year because I just started sewing this weekend! This year's handmade holiday is going to be a lot saner because I'll just be sewing along to just one craft book instead of going crazy trying to follow all the holiday ornament tutorials on the web. To celebrate a new season and the upcoming holidays, Sweet Tidings is bringing you a series of sweet shop features and crafty giveaways from some of the sweetest ETSY shops around (more sponsors appearing in the sidebar soon). Time for something sweet! Let me share with you my favorite brownie which I baked just this afternoon. The recipe is from pastry chef Gail Gand. This one bowl brownie recipe always turns out rich, moist and perfect everytime! I love it simple and unglazed. You can print the recipe here from the Food Network website.

Fudgy Brownies

1/2 stick unsalted butter
2 ounces unsweetened chocolate
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/8 tsp. salt
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. Melt the butter and chocolate together in a medium pan over very low heat. Stir together and remove from the heat.

3. Add sugar, eggs and vanilla. Mix well. Stir in the flour and salt. Add nuts. Spread the mixture into a buttered 8-inch square pan. Bake until set, about 40 minutes. Cool before cutting.

It's also 99 days before Christmas! For the coming weeks and months, I'll be posting special features, gift guides and promos from some of my favorite ETSY shops plus sweet, sponsor giveaways! I warmly welcome sponsor giveaways from shops who are in the crafts/handmade/DIY/design and inspiration genre. In exchange, giveaway sponsors will avail of a special blog feature highlighting their shops and products, 2-month ad space, twitter updates, gift guide suggestions. Totally no fees involved. Shops who are interested in this opportunity may drop me an email at moxygirl(at)gmail.com.

Best craft room organizing tips

Create tidy, relaxing and inviting craft rooms with expert organizing tips and how-to's:

Acornmoon: The Art of Valerie Greeley

One of the artists and bloggers that I read on a regular basis and whom I consider a favorite is the incredibly talented and delightfully unassuming Valerie Greeley. She blogs at Acornmoon, an art and craft journal where she shares her love for handmade and handprinted books, illustrations, fabric/surface design, nature and garden. Her nature walks with her dog Ted are often a source of inspiration for most of her designs.

As a surface and fabric designer, she designs beautiful quilt fabrics inspired by charming English countryside sceneries, hedgerows, seasonal nature delights and woodland creatures. Her charming fabric collections
(Hedgerow, Herb Garden & Nestled in Springtime) designed for Makower UK are available at Tabby Cat, a UK based fabric emporium that specializes in fine, artist-designed fabrics. Her very detailed fabric designs are a quilter's joy!
Aside from designing fabrics of exceptional intricacy and detail, Valerie has also authored, designed and illustrated a number of picture books and gift books.More information about her whimsically illustrated books can be found at Books Illustrated Ltd and Zybooks Artist Books Online. Her surface pattern design talent has also produced a beautiful collection of hudson and middleton bone china designer mugs as well as fine array of products such as greeting cards, aprons, tote bags and tee shirts. All of these products are available at her Zazzle Shop. For purveyors of the fine art of handmade books (illustrated, printed and bound by Valerie herself), Valerie has an ETSY shop that offers handmade books and gifts.
