Katherine Hepburn Brownies (with Chocolate Hazelnut Glaze)

There's always room for another brownie recipe! This recipe is said to have come from the famous hollywood actress and was published in gossip columnist Liz Smith's column. Spread a generous layer of chocolate hazelnut spread on the cooled brownies for a richer flavor.

Katharine Hepburn Brownies (with Chocolate Hazelnut Glaze)

  • 2 ounces (60 grams) unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 cup (113 grams) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 1 cup (200 grams) granulated white sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (30 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) and place rack in center of oven. Butter and flour an 8 inch (20 cm) square baking pan.

2. Melt the chocolate and butter in a stainless steel bowl placed over a saucepan of simmering water. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar. Next, stir in the vanilla extract and eggs. Finally, stir in the flour, salt and chopped nuts (if using).

3. Pour into the prepared pan and bake for about 30 - 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack. Serve at room temperature or chilled.

Hello, Hello Handmade! (The New Blog)

Say hello, hello!

The blog I've always wanted to write is here! Hello, Hello Handmade is purely devoted to handmade art, good finds, handmade artists and random scribblings and musings.

Fresh beginnings are so exciting!

Indulge in a Melting Moment

My inner cookies monster can't get enough of this yummy cookie!

Melting Moment is my new favorite treat and I'm filling my cookie jar to the brim with its buttery, melt-in-your mouth goodness. The recipe is from one of my favorite recipe sites Joy of Baking.

Melting Moments Recipe
  • 1 1/2 cups (195 grams) all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (60 grams) cornstarch (corn flour)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup (30 grams) confectioners sugar (powdered or icing)
  • 1 cup (227 grams) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

    Topping:

1/2 cup (60 grams) confectioners sugar (powdered or icing)

Directions:

1.In a medium sized bowl whisk together the flour, cornstarch and salt.

2. In the bowl of your electric mixer (or with a hand mixer), beat the butter and sugar until creamy and smooth (about 2 minutes). Beat in the vanilla extract. Add the flour mixture and beat just until incorporated. Cover and refrigerate the batter for an hour or two, or until firm.

3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C) and place rack in center of oven. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

4. When batter is firm, form into 1 inch (2.5 cm) balls and place the cookies on the prepared baking sheets, spacing about 1 inch apart. Bake for about 10 - 14 minutes or until the edges of the cookies just start to brown. Remove from oven and place on a wire rack to cool for about 3-5 minutes. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack that is placed over a sheet of parchment or wax paper. Put the confectioners sugar in a fine strainer or sieve and sprinkle the tops of the cookies with the sugar.

Makes about 3 dozen cookies.

    Let's Pray for Japan

Let's take a minute or two to pause and pray for our brothers and sisters in Japan. This prayer is lifted from Paolo Coelho's Blog:

    Prayer for Japan

May our daily reconstruction be the result of the very best that we carry within us.
    Give us the courage
to be able to reconstruct what was destroyed
to be able to recover what was lost
to be able to accept what was gone forever.
May you give us courage to look ahead,
may we never look back nor allow our soul to be discouraged.
Lord, give us enthusiasm, because Enthusiasm reaffirms to us that everything is possible, as long as we are totally committed to what we are doing.
Lord, may the Earth continue to transform seeds into wheat, may we continue to transmute wheat into bread. Do not leave us in solitude.
Have compassion on us, Lord. For we often think we are dressed when we are naked.
Do not forget, in your mercy, our friends in Japan, who are now teaching us the meaning of Courage, Reconstruction, Solidarity and Enthusiasm.
    Amen.

    (translated by Ken Crane )

Donating to the Japanese Red Cross Society will also be a great help to alleviate suffering in the areas affected. Jojoebi of A Bit of This and Bit of That has a Japan earthquake and tsunami relief initiative going on in her blog. Please check it out.

A secretive expression courses through the smooth details of this mask. One finger appears raised to his lips, asking for a moment's discretion. The abstractly balanced composition comes from the imagination of Nyoman Naranata, who uses hibiscus wood to create a vision of natural intrigue. A hand-carved masterpiece for the home collection.

Jacaranda wood lends its extraordinary beauty to this quena flute. Crafted by hand, it is a legacy of the Inca, an indispensable instrument in today's traditional Peruvian music. Benito Tito perforates holes of different widths to ensure a sweet sound and tunes it to 440. The mouthpiece is carved from bone and its case emulates pre-Hispanic textiles.

Blue topaz flower necklace, 'Sacred Blue Lotus'

Prized for its purity, the lotus lives in muddy water yet is untouchably wholesome and clean; thus it reflects the highest expression of beauty. Nyoman Rena creates the pristine flower as a sterling silver pendant necklace, centered by a glowing blue topaz.

Set amid swirling tendrils, a perfect orchid poises delicately as a stickpin. Danai designs beautiful jewelry from natural blossoms. Immortalized in sterling silver, the pink rock orchid emanates its ethereal radiance.

    3/4 cup sugar
    1 1/4 tsp baking powder

    2 eggs
    1 cup milk
    2 tbsp salad oil

    Directions:

    1. In a large bowl, combine flour sugar, baking powder and salt. In a smaller bowl, whisk together eggs, milk and oil. Pour the egg mixture into the flour mixture and mix until smooth. Set aside.

    2. Coat a griddle with cooking spray and preheat to 350F.

    3. To make smiling baby cakes, use 1 tablespoon batter to outline a smile and two dots for eyes  on the heated griddle. Once the batter begins to bubble and dry, pour 1/4 cup batter around the eyes and smile and fill in.
