Playful DIY Crafts

I really believe the spirit of play is the essence of crafting and DIY-ing. No wonder time just stands still when we indulge in our favorite crafts. Check out some of my handpicked play inspired crafts pictured above. The animal pincushion is really on my must-make soon list.

Sorry for the intermittent posts and lack of new DIY tutorials. I'm currently attending to urgent matters but I'll be back soon with a new tutorial. Happy Thursday!

Shabby Apple Giveaway Winner

Hello there! Sorry for the late posting of the Shabby Apple Giveaway results. Life has been hectic and haven't been able to update the blog as regularly as I can.

Here is the result of the Shabby Apple giveaway. The winner is commenter #20: Cathy F. On her comment she writes:

" Shabby Apple is a lovely shop - lots of shoes, clothes and accessories. I particularly like the Eager and Glowing shoes.

Thank you for this generous giveaway."

Congratulations to the winner! I will be sending a confirmation email soon. Thank you to all who joined. I will be back with another giveaway sometime soon.

DIY Hand-stamped Paper Placemat

My favorite casual dining Italian restaurant uses a risographed paper placemat and cutlery wrapped in tiny brown paper bags. I love  it's down -to-earth, eco-chic look. I wanted to recreate the same style for a cozy cafe feeling when  friends come over for coffee and cupcakes. Instead of using risographed design, I go for the charm of  rustic, hand-stamped  accents.

Pattern paperPaper cutter/scallop scissorsRubber stampStamp pad  1. Using a paper cutter, cut out a letter sized 8.5 rectangle from the pattern paper.

2. Add shape to the edges by adding a scallop shaped design. You can use a scallop scissor or paper  puncher.

3. Stamp border using your rubber stamp design of choice.

Hoppity hop

It's that time of the year when handmade plushy bunnies go hoppity- hop! I always look forward to Easter crafting as it is my tradition to sew bunny plushies every year.  Last year I made Tilda springtime bunnies and this year I'm making made soft bunnies from Ottobre Design's free pattern. These anatomically irreverent bunnies really remind me of  Hallmark's zany Hoops and Yoyo character duo!

Thank you to all who participated in the sponsored giveaway from Shabby Apple. I will be closing the competition in the next 2 hours. Better drop your name in the hat before comments are closed.

Chocolate Lollipop Cookies

I love trying out the recipes from Baking School, a Korean baking site. The recipes are always flawlessly formulated with the sugar level always falling on the median scale. Not too sweet, not too bland and as Goldilocks would say, this "______" tastes just right.

This weekend, I tried my hand on making무설탕 유기농 초코 롤리팝쿠키 or "Sugar free organic chocolate lollipop cookie". I think it means white sugar free as muscovado sugar is still sugar but a healthier version.

Chocolate Lollipop Cookies

Rice flour, 220 grams ( I used all-purpose flour since I only have glutinous rice flour available)1 eggUnsalted butter, 70 gramsMuscovado sugar, 70 grams Baking powder 1/2 tspCocoa powder, 2 tbspHandful of organic chocolate chips (I used ordinary chocolate chip morsels)Wooden popsicle sticks
1. Cream butter and sugar. Add egg.

2. Sift together flour, cocoa powder, salt and baking powder. Add to butter mixture.

3. Blend well until mixture forms a firm dough.

Cloud in a Room

That's not faux cotton candy cloud hanging from the ceiling. It is in fact, umm, real!

That amazing, science meets art man-made cloud called Cumulus II was created by Dutch artist Berndnaut Smilde. It was created in  'Probe,' a test lab for art projects. Smilde was able to create the cloud through the use of smoke, moist and and dramatic lighting.  With all things ephemeral, this magical cloud in a room only exists for a moment before it evaporates into the ether.

Spring and Summer Flowergarden Angel

One of my simple joys is sewing little handmade dolls. I love the warm, fuzzy feeling I get after putting the finishing touches to a doll or toy. It may sound strange but I consider doll making my spiritual exercise. More than any hobby or activity, sewing dolls makes me feel like I'm co-creating with the universe to add a little bit of beauty to this oftentimes sad world. My previous blog post highlights that stream of thinking.

This Flowergarden Angel is made from one of the doll patterns from Tilda's Summer Ideas book. I incorporated my own style by adding straps to the doll's dress and embellishing the flip flops with beaded flowers.

Have a beautiful new week!

A Handmade Life

“ Those who guide us, who inspire us, having gone our way before, are now partners with us in building a better world. Any success we have is theirs as well as ours. To copy or imitate them should be only the beginning-the apprentice stage of life. It is fine to think, "what will a Shaker do? What would Scott Nearing have said? What would Gandhi have thought?" These are good exercises for the mind, a way of weighing ideas and contemplated actions, valuable so long as we do not follow anyone blindly.
Only by standing on their shoulders can we build a better world, but we should use the wise as advisers, not masters.”

― William Coperthwaite, A Handmade Life: In Search of Simplicity

Cozy Craft Spaces and Food Films

I'm dreaming of cozy craft spaces like these! Natural wood tones are my favorite color schemes of the moment. Mustard yellow paired with off white, espresso tones and pine wood gives a natural, romantic feel to any space.

The PearlMountain Photo Watermark Software giveaway is ending tonight! This nifty software is a great tool to help you protect your shop or website images.  Licensed software worth $19.90 will be given away to the first 20 people who leave a comment.

Thanks to Jenna's movie recommendation, I also watched a cute Japanese token food film Patisserie Coin de Rue (洋菓子店コアンドル) this weekend.

The movie features Yu Aoi , my favorite J-actress. I found the movie to be visually delightful and tactile (Japanese films seem to have this signature characteristic) even if the story line is nothing extraordinary. I will watch this movie again for the extreme close-ups of raspberry macaron sandwiches and ethereal petit cakes.

You can watch the movie online here. It doesn't …

Thank You

To readers and visitors old and new, thank you always for dropping by. Have a wonderful weekend!

Cake for Breakfast Printable Art from Wild Olive

Hmm, if only sugar weren't so evil I'd eat cake for breakfast for the rest of my life!

For me, a delightfully airy chiffon cake piled with clouds of fluffy, white frosting and downed with a frosty glass of orange juice would make the best breakfast treat in the world. Alternately, I can just print and frame Wild Olive's sweet printable PDF art  and display it near my breakfast nook. It would perk up my day even if I'm just staring at a bowl of oatmeal.

Hope you have entered the PearlMountain Photo Watermark giveaway? There will be 20 licensed copies of this super useful and time saving software to be given away. Practically everyone who enters the giveaway will be a winner.
